Wound healing is a normal physiological response to tissue damage. Wound healing is not an easy process and is an interaction between many cell types, cytokines, mediators, and the vascular system. When an injury occurs, the first phase is always an outpouring of lymphatic fluid and blood. It is at this stage that proper haemostasis is established. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation pathways are activated and contribute to the cessation of blood loss.

Concerns In Wound Healing

Wounds usually heal within 4 to 6 weeks. Chronic wounds are those that do not heal within this period.

Hypoxia, bacterial colonisation, ischaemia, reperfusion injury, altered cellular response, and collagen synthesis disorder are some of the many factors that impair recovery. Malnutrition or smoking can contribute. Pressure, tissue oedema, hypoxia, infection, maceration, and dehydration are just a few of the local factors that might cause a delay in wound healing. In the process of bacterial biofilm, it can also create a physical barrier. Why is it necessary for blood flow to take place, and what role does it play? Maintaining the problems which arise, a significant element which is involved in the process of healing of a wound is ‘blood’. There must be proper blood circulation which must take place to heal the wound fully.

The healing process consists of the following four steps:

  1. Haemostasis (clot formation) halts the bleeding, and the body quickly forms a blood clot in response to injury.
  2. Inflammation (immune response) is when the blood contains white blood cells, particularly neutrophils and macrophages, which fight infection and clear debris.
  3. Proliferation (Tissue Regeneration) supplies oxygen and nutrients to the developing tissue, new blood vessels (angiogenesis) form
  4. Remodelling (Scar Formation): The last stage is collagen deposition and wound contraction.

How Can Poor Blood Circulation Affect The Healing Process?

Poor circulation does not give the needed elements for the tissue to heal well. When the wound remains untreated for many years, then there is a high risk of infection, it turning chronic and also a chance of amputating the arm too. Several factors contribute to the lesser supply of blood, like age, diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol, drugs, pressure due to immobility, dead skin and venous insufficiency.

Means of enhancing blood circulation

  1. Increasing cardiovascular work
  2. Stop smoking
  3. Take in more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet
  4. Cutting down on saturated fats
  5. Yoga
  6. Wearing compression stockings

Conclusion

Poor circulation prolongs tissue repair, predisposes to infection, and may precipitate severe consequences. Understanding the importance of adequate circulation and adjusting some lifestyle measures can promote more rapid recovery and prevent long-term health effects. Prioritising vascular function may enable an individual to ensure proper healing of his or her wound and prevent long-term illness resulting from faulty healing.
