The Oasis rumour mill went into overdrive
Oasis fans’ excitement went into overdrive this week after a series of posters appeared around Manchester city centre.
Plastered in locations across the city, including the Northern Quarter, Oxford Road corridor and parts of south Manchester, they seemed to apparently tease new music from the band.
However, they were, in fact, an ingenious marketing ploy from another well-known Manchester band.
They said: “Fill in the blanks…Which chart-topping Mancunian band is releasing new music in 2025?”
The clues were that they are ‘two brothers’ embarking on a 2025 tour, are Manchester City fans, formed in the 90s and have multiple number 1 albums.
There were five dotted letter spaces with just ‘s’ filled in. That, predictably, saw the rumour mill go into overdrive. Oasis announced last August they were reforming and embarking on a huge UK, which is taking place later this year.
However, they are yet to announce any new material. “Oasis all but confirmed to be releasing new music with the posters around Manchester. What a time to be alive,” one fan said on X, formerly Twitter. “Do you think the poster is about OASIS??” another said.
However, the posters were in fact, it has been confirmed, referring to Doves. The band comprises of frontman and bassist Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers, guitarist Jez and drummer Andy Williams.
Initially performing as dance act Sub Sub they changed their name to Doves and changed their sound in the late 1990s.
They have had three number 1 albums with 2002’s The Last Broadcast, 2005’s Some Cities and 2020’s The Universal Want all topping the charts.
They are big City fans and played a concert on the pitch following the Blues last game at Maine Road in May 2003.
Their latest record, Constellations for the Lonely, was released on Friday (February 28).
They are currently out on a UK headline tour. However frontman Jimi Goodwin is not taking part. He announced at the end of the last year he was ‘stepping back from live to focus on his wellbeing.’
